Republican attorneys general demand that Costco abandon diversity policies, cite Trump’s directive

A group of Republican attorneys general has issued a letter to Costco CEO Ron Vachris, urging the retailer to end what they perceive as unlawful discrimination in its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. The attorneys general, citing President Trump’s executive order, believe that Costco should treat individuals based on merit rather than DEI practices. They have requested Costco to either repeal its DEI policies or provide an explanation for keeping them within 30 days.

Despite pressure from the attorneys general, Costco shareholders recently rejected a proposal to examine the risks posed by the company’s DEI policies, with 98% of shareholders voting against the measure. Costco’s board chair affirmed the company’s commitment to inclusion without compromising merit or implementing quotas.

Costco has not publicly responded to the letter from the attorneys general, and a spokesperson for the company did not provide immediate comment. In the face of changing viewpoints on DEI policies, some companies like Walmart and Meta have scaled back their commitments, while others like Microsoft and Apple have reaffirmed their dedication to diversity practices. DEI policies are intended to address bias and promote fairness in areas such as employment and education.

Costco operates stores in North Dakota, and the company’s stance on DEI policies aligns with its commitment to hiring and promoting the most qualified individuals. The issue of discrimination in DEI policies continues to be a topic of debate among companies across the nation.
