After 24 days, Deadly Eaton and Palisades fires fully extinguished

The Palisades and Eaton fires in Southern California, which started over three weeks ago, have been declared fully contained by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The Palisades Fire erupted in Pacific Palisades and quickly spread due to dry weather conditions, while the Eaton Fire started in Los Angeles County and spread into Altadena due to hurricane-force winds. A total of 29 people were killed in the two fires. The Palisades Fire covered 23,448 acres and destroyed thousands of structures, while the Eaton Fire destroyed over 9,000 structures in Altadena, including historic homes and landmarks.

The official cause of the fires is still under investigation. The wildfires were fueled by drought-like conditions and powerful offshore winds, prompting the National Weather Service to issue warnings of extreme fire weather. Gov. Gavin Newsom deployed state fire personnel and equipment to the area as a precaution. The recent rainfall in Southern California helped reduce the fire potential and aided firefighters in containing the blazes.

Despite overwhelming most attempts to stop them, some fires like the Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills were contained and extinguished. Cal Fire Chief Joe Tyler credited the recent storm with helping firefighters control the deadly L.A. blazes. The wildfires have caused significant damage and loss of life, highlighting the ongoing threat of wildfires in California during times of extreme weather conditions.
