Virg Foss shares insights on taking the next step

Virg Foss, a long-time fan of UND hockey, shared his journey of becoming a North Dakota fan in a recent press article. Foss recounted how his allegiance shifted from Minnesota to North Dakota during his first game in 1953, when his father, a pastor in Grand Forks, gave him an ultimatum to cheer for the Fighting Sioux or find another seat at the rink. Since then, Foss has remained a dedicated fan of UND hockey.

Despite the team’s current challenges in the standings, Foss believes that there is still much to play for in the remaining league games. UND has a chance to secure a top-four finish and earn home ice advantage for the league playoffs, giving them a shot at an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Foss acknowledged that this season’s team lacks standout individual players but has shown potential to compete with top teams in the country.

Looking ahead to the upcoming series against St. Cloud State, Foss sees an opportunity for UND to solidify their position for post-season play. Having beaten the Huskies in December, a repeat performance this weekend could be a significant step forward for the team.

As a former journalist who covered UND hockey for over three decades, Foss now writes a weekly column on Fighting Hawk hockey. He remains connected to the sport that has been a significant part of his life, hoping to continue his involvement for as long as possible.
