Renowned American figure skating legend and commentator Dick Button passes away at 95

U.S. figure skating icon Dick Button, who won consecutive Olympic gold medals on the ice and later became a legendary voice of the sport on television, passed away at the age of 95, according to U.S. Figure Skating. He first gained prominence in 1948 by landing the first double axel in competition, and later the first triple loop and innovating the “Button camel” spin in his gold-medal-winning efforts in 1952. Button’s legacy as a skater and commentator revolutionized figure skating and he continued to be a key figure in the sport until his passing. Button provided figure skating analysis for CBS and NBC at various Winter Olympics, and was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2015. Known for his wit and brutal honesty, Button’s commentary was an integral part of figure skating broadcasts for years. He is survived by his partner Dennis Grimaldi, and two children, Edward and Emily Button. The figure skating community mourns his loss and honors his lasting impact on the sport.
