Former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to lead the Department of Interior in President Donald Trump’s administration. In a bipartisan vote of 79-18, Burgum was supported by North Dakota Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, who praised his commitment to advancing U.S. energy production. Burgum, a wealthy businessman, served as governor from 2016 until mid-December, when he was succeeded by former U.S. Rep. Kelly Armstrong. As Interior Secretary, Burgum plans to focus on responsible use of natural resources while promoting environmental stewardship. He has also committed to divesting from oil and gas leases and energy stocks to prevent conflicts of interest. Burgum’s nomination was endorsed by leaders of the five tribes in North Dakota, who see him as an ally. Born in small-town North Dakota, Burgum became a billionaire by investing in Great Plains Software and later served as chair of the North Dakota Industrial Commission. He will be the second former North Dakota governor to serve in a U.S. Cabinet position.
