Syracuse University News: IT Services cautions against immigration and payment scams

The Information Technology Services (ITS) team at Syracuse University has issued a warning to international students who may be targeted by a scam involving impersonation of government agencies. The attackers, posing as agencies like U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, contact victims claiming there are visa or immigration issues that require urgent payments. The scammers often pressure victims to stay silent and make payments using gift cards.

ITS advises students to be cautious of any demands for payments made via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers, as legitimate government agencies and businesses would never ask for money in these forms. If students receive a threatening email or call, they are urged not to respond and to report it immediately to the ITS Helpdesk for assistance. Students are also encouraged to verify any requests by contacting the agency directly using official contact information.

This warning comes as part of ITS’s efforts to protect the campus community from cyber threats and scams. By raising awareness about this specific scam targeting international students, ITS hopes to prevent students from falling victim to fraudulent schemes. International students are reminded to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to ensure their safety and security while studying at Syracuse University. For more information or assistance, students can reach out to the ITS team at 315.443.2677.
