Recent Report from ALA Criticizes North Dakota’s Tobacco Policies | Local News, Sports, and Employment Opportunities

The American Lung Association has released the 2025 State of Tobacco Control report, evaluating North Dakota’s tobacco control policies. While the state received good marks for funding prevention programs and smoke-free workplace laws, it received failing grades for tobacco taxes and availability of flavored products. Bills have been introduced in the 69th North Dakota Legislative Assembly to increase taxes on tobacco products. The ALA supports these proposals to align with neighboring states. They do not support a bill creating juvenile court proceedings for minor tobacco offenses, believing consequences should not include criminal records. Despite FDA orders to remove flavored e-cigarettes from the market, flavored disposable vapes continue to be sold. The FDA issued warning letters to retailers, most of whom are Chinese companies. The ALA is advocating for the removal of illegal products from the market and further oversight of manufacturers. The issue is pending in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The ALA warns of a vaping epidemic among kids and calls for immediate action.
