Public Comment Period Requirement Debated at North Dakota Legislature, According to North Dakota Monitor

North Dakota school boards are voicing their opposition to Senate Bill 2180, which would require public comment periods during regular meetings of local subdivisions. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Bob Paulson, aims to address complaints of limited public comment opportunities or strict regulations on comments at local government meetings. The amended bill would mandate monthly public comment periods without restricting the topics of discussion to agenda items. However, the North Dakota School Boards Association and 168 school boards are against the bill, arguing that local rules should be controlled at the local level to maintain order during meetings. On the other hand, supporters of the bill, such as former Horace mayor Kory Peterson, believe that public comments can bring important issues to light. As the bill progresses, further amendments will be made to provide more control to political subdivisions over their public comment policies.
