Gov.-elect Kelly Armstrong has announced new appointments to lead the Office of Management and Budget, Commerce, and Information Technology departments in North Dakota. These appointments come as Armstrong makes structural and stylistic changes to leadership roles in state government. Joe Morrissette, part of Armstrong’s transition team, will return as director of the Office of Management and Budget.
Additionally, Chris Schilken has been named commissioner of the Department of Commerce, succeeding Commissioner Josh Teigen. Armstrong also announced the reappointment of several Cabinet members from the previous administration. Rep. Corey Mock, D-Grand Forks, was appointed chief information officer for the North Dakota Information Technology Department.
Armstrong and Lt. Gov.-elect Michelle Strinden are retaining several Cabinet members, including Brig. Gen. Mitchell Johnson, Pat Bertagnolli, and Dave Glatt. However, there will be changes in leadership positions in various departments. Notably, State Health Officer Dr. Nizar Wehbi announced his last day would be on December 14.
Armstrong stressed that the new appointments are not personal, but strategic changes to strengthen leadership roles in the state government. Some positions are yet to be announced, and Armstrong’s term will officially begin on December 15. Overall, these appointments signify a new direction for the leadership of North Dakota and a fresh start as Armstrong takes office.
