Fighting Hawks Suffer Home Loss to Montana

Fighting Hawks Fall Short Against Montana, Prepare for Upcoming Matchup

Grand Forks, N.D. – The University of North Dakota women’s basketball team suffered a 71-59 defeat against Montana on Thursday evening, bringing their season record to 2-2.

The Fighting Hawks showcased an energetic start, scoring first with a 5-point run and keeping Montana scoreless for the initial two minutes. North Dakota led until 7:22 left in the first quarter when Montana’s Waddington drained a three-pointer, providing the Lady Griz with a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the game. Walker Demers and Mikayla Aumer collectively tallied 10 points in the opening quarter, helping UND to an early competitive stance.

However, the second quarter proved challenging for the Hawks, as they were outscored 24-14, and entered halftime facing a significant 46-28 deficit. Fatima Ibrahim stepped up with six points during this stretch.

North Dakota regrouped after halftime, narrowing the gap by outscoring Montana 18-13 in the third quarter, led by Kiera Pemberton’s eight points. Though the Hawks shot well in the third, they still trailed 59-46 by the end of the segment.

In a strong fourth quarter, Ibrahim finished with a career-high 17 points, contributing crucial points, including a couple of field goals. Despite UND’s late push, which saw them outscore Montana 13-12 in the final frame, it wasn’t enough to pull ahead.

The Fighting Hawks will seek redemption in their first road game of the season against Western Kentucky on Sunday, November 24, at 1 p.m. Fans can catch the game on ESPN+ or via the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
