American Airlines has introduced new technology to enforce stricter boarding group procedures to prevent “line-jumping” and premature boardings of flights. The technology requires passengers to scan their boarding pass at a gate scanner, and if it’s not their turn to board, an audible beep will sound and a nearby agent will remove them from the line. This new measure has received positive feedback from passengers and staff, leading American Airlines to roll out the technology at over 100 more airports across the U.S.
The new technology was first tested at Albuquerque International Sunport Airport and Tucson International Airport before being implemented at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Two confirmed airports that will receive the technology are Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin. The goal of the technology is to prevent overcrowding at gates and expedite the boarding process for priority passengers.
American Airlines currently has a list of boarding groups with specific requirements for each group, including first-class passengers, military members, AAdvantage loyalty program members, and more. Families with children under two years old are also allowed to board early. The airline has not provided a specific timeline for when all airports will receive the new technology.
Overall, American Airlines is pleased with the initial response to the new boarding procedures and aims to continue improving the boarding experience for travelers ahead of the upcoming holiday season.
