Sioux Falls Prepares for Major Upgrades to Arrowhead Parkway
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The City of Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Department of Transportation hosted a public open house on Wednesday concerning the next phase of the Arrowhead Parkway project. Over 500 postcards were dispatched to local residents, inviting them to learn more about the developments. The response was overwhelming, with around 150 people attending the event within 30 minutes of its start at Fred Assam Elementary School.
The second phase of the project, known as Phase 2-B, will significantly remodel the major intersection at Veteran’s Parkway, set to commence in spring 2024. This reconstruction is aimed at enhancing safety and traffic capacity in one of the city’s busiest areas, expanding to six lanes in each direction along with multiple turn lanes.
Sioux Falls engineering project manager Shannon Ausen emphasized the importance of minimizing the impact on surrounding property owners during the redesign, which involves lowering the intersection by three to five feet and potentially necessitating the construction of a retaining wall. The upgrades will also require relocating a detention pond and creating a new storm drain system.
Three pedestrian underpasses, a request of local residents, are part of the plan to facilitate safer mobility. Ausen noted the community’s desire for biking and walking routes to connect neighborhoods with commercial areas.
While construction is expected to result in congestion and detours, city officials assure locals that access to surrounding areas will remain open. Ausen advised commuters to prepare for delays, stressing the importance of patience as the city anticipates the long-term benefits of the project, projected for completion in 2026.
