Fargo, N.D. – Incident Involving Highway Patrol Vehicle Highlights Traffic Safety Concerns
A North Dakota Highway Patrol vehicle was struck from behind while providing traffic control for a tow operator on a recent day, raising concerns about roadway safety for emergency personnel. According to a press release from the ND Highway Patrol, the incident occurred when the Patrol vehicle, activated with overhead amber emergency lights, was stationed in the left lane assisting a tow operator who was retrieving a vehicle from the median.
During its operation, the Highway Patrol vehicle was unexpectedly hit by a Chevrolet Traverse, resulting in the Patrol vehicle being forced into the right lane and causing the Traverse to veer into the median. The impact led to significant damages, requiring both vehicles to be towed from the scene. Fortunately, the State Trooper endured only minor injuries and was subsequently taken to a local medical facility for assessment.
The driver of the Traverse, identified as 31-year-old Stephane Kayee, was unharmed but has been charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, as well as operating a vehicle without insurance.
This incident underscores the ongoing risks faced by law enforcement and emergency responders while on duty. The ND Highway Patrol urges motorists to adhere to laws regarding emergency vehicles to ensure the safety of those attending to roadside emergencies. As the investigation continues, the Highway Patrol emphasizes its commitment to enhancing traffic safety across the state.
This event serves as a reminder for all drivers to remain vigilant and comply with traffic regulations, especially when approaching emergency situations.
