Minot City Council Advances Key Infrastructure and Safety Projects
MINOT, ND – During Monday’s meeting, the Minot City Council approved a slate of infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing safety and addressing aging structures, with a focus on potential federal funding.
A primary initiative discussed was the plan to seek a $1.5 million federal grant to initiate preliminary engineering for the replacement of the Third Street Bridge, known for its deteriorating condition. City Engineer Lance Meyer articulated that the bridge requires the immediate attention of its ailing pier, which led to a temporary closure earlier this year. As part of a longer-term strategy, Meyer outlined a phased approach to address issues with the bridge, highlighting the need to understand project costs, estimated between $30-$40 million for a complete replacement.
Additionally, the council prioritized railroad safety improvements, particularly at the Eighth Avenue Southeast CPKC rail crossing, which has been troublesome due to rough riding conditions. Notably, they also plan to signalize the only unsignalized rail crossing in Minot, located near the Amtrak Depot.
The council discussed a proposed Safe Routes to School project intended for the Edison Elementary area but faced pushback from Council Member Mike Blessum, who questioned its necessity given cost implications and maintenance burdens placed on property owners. Despite his concerns, the project remains on the list, which will be reviewed by the Central Dakota Metropolitan Planning Organization.
In related news, the council approved additional budget amendments totaling $100,000 to fund an expanding investigation into Police Chief John Klug, who is currently on leave due to allegations of a hostile work environment within the department. The investigation costs will be covered by savings from unfilled officer positions.
These initiatives highlight Minot’s commitment to improving safety and infrastructure while addressing pressing community needs.
