North Dakota Permit Brings Summit Closer to Construction

Summit Carbon Solutions took a significant step forward in their carbon pipeline project with the approval of the pipeline route in North Dakota. This approval brings the company one step closer to meeting conditions set by the Iowa Utilities Commission to begin construction. The pipeline, spanning over 2,000 miles across five states, aims to transport carbon dioxide from ethanol refineries to underground storage.

After securing permits in both North Dakota and South Dakota, Summit Carbon Solutions can now progress with construction in Iowa. The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association expressed encouragement at the news and highlighted the importance of the project for corn demand and lowering carbon emissions. However, opponents such as Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement remain steadfast in their opposition to the pipeline, citing concerns for community health and environmental impact.

While the project has faced setbacks and opposition, advocates like CEO of American Carbon Alliance believe in the benefits the pipeline will bring in terms of energy security, farmer profitability, job creation, and biofuel production. The approval of the route in North Dakota, though a significant milestone, did not grant the company eminent domain, leading to continued disputes and legal challenges.

Summit Carbon Solutions is now awaiting a decision from Iowa regulators to move forward with the project. Despite the hurdles, the company remains committed to their vision of creating a sprawling carbon dioxide pipeline system.
