North Dakota Legislature Seeks Temporary Staff for Upcoming Session
Bismarck, ND – The North Dakota Legislature is currently offering approximately 80 temporary positions as it prepares for the upcoming legislative session in January. Key roles include sergeants-at-arms, legislative pages, and committee clerks, all crucial for the efficient operation of the session, which commences on January 7, 2024.
Renae Doan, administrative assistant to Senate Majority Leader David Hogue, emphasized the urgency of filling these roles. "We’d like to have them filled before Thanksgiving," she stated, highlighting that previous staff members have secured other jobs, creating a need for fresh applicants. Compensation for these positions ranges from $136 to $239 per day, with paychecks issued monthly; however, the roles do not include health benefits.
Candidates should possess nonpartisan attitudes, a professional appearance, and strong customer service skills, as they often interact directly with the public. "They are one of the first ones that the general public comes in and sees," Doan added.
Sen. Dick Dever, chair of the Senate Employment Committee, noted the unique experience of working in the legislature, recalling how his wife still holds seniority over him from her time as a procedural clerk. He remarked on the invaluable perspectives gained regarding legislators’ dedication.
The roles include sergeants-at-arms, responsible for maintaining decorum, and legislative pages, who assist lawmakers with various tasks on the chamber floor. The two categories of committee clerks—technology clerks, in charge of digital operations, and procedural clerks, who manage documentation—are especially in demand due to the legislature’s increasing digital orientation.
Training for the newly hired staff will take place from December 9-13. Interested applicants can apply through the North Dakota Legislative Council’s job portal, with a legislative session estimated to last 80 days, concluding by May 2.
