Summit Carbon Solutions Secures Key Approval for $8 Billion CO2 Pipeline in North Dakota
North Dakota regulators have granted approval for a crucial segment of a five-state, $8 billion carbon dioxide pipeline, representing a significant victory for Summit Carbon Solutions in its ambition to construct the world’s largest CO2 storage and transportation network. This decision comes over a year after the North Dakota Public Service Commission initially denied the company’s application, leading Summit Carbon to modify its proposed route and seek a re-evaluation.
The recent approval marks the second major state endorsement for Summit Carbon this year; the Iowa Utilities Commission gave its nod in June. However, challenges remain, as the company still seeks the authority to proceed in South Dakota—a pivotal state situated between North Dakota, where the CO2 will be injected underground, and the numerous ethanol plants that will supply the CO2.
Wade Boeshans, executive vice president of Summit Carbon, expressed gratitude for the North Dakota decision, highlighting it as a testament to the state’s commitment to innovation while fostering collaboration with local communities and industries. The successful navigation of regulatory hurdles demonstrates the project’s potential to advance carbon management strategies, which are vital in mitigating climate change.
As the initiative moves forward, its success will hinge on securing additional approvals from neighboring states. Stakeholders are keenly monitoring the developments, as the pipeline is anticipated to play a critical role in the future of carbon capture and storage, bolstering the sustainability efforts of the ethanol sector and beyond.
