On Sunday, Sen. Markwayne Mullin defended Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for HHS, stating that Kennedy is intelligent on vaccine issues and questioning the rise of autism in the US. Mullin believes vaccines should be questioned, linking them to autism, despite scientific evidence to the contrary. The CDC has stated that vaccines do not cause autism, citing studies that found them to be safe. Kennedy has a history of baselessly questioning vaccines and promoting conspiracy theories. Mullin also expressed support for Trump using recess appointments for nominees, a process that allows the president to appoint without Senate confirmation. The Senate avoids this process, and Obama’s attempt was rejected by the Supreme Court. Mullin sees recess appointments as a last resort but would support them if necessary to secure confirmation for Trump’s nominees.
