Press Release: Manufacturing Expansion in McLean County Signals Economic Shift
Bloomington-Normal, IL – Once primarily recognized as the headquarters of State Farm Insurance and home to Illinois State University, McLean County is experiencing a significant economic transformation, fueled by a resurgence in manufacturing. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the region has welcomed thousands of new jobs, notably through Rivian’s electric vehicle production and a new candy facility for Ferrero.
Patrick Hoban, president of the Bloomington-Normal Economic Development Council, highlighted the unexpected growth, stating, "This is not something we were known for before 2019." Rivian alone has expanded its workforce from 300 to 8,000 employees in a remarkably short time. This trend reflects a broader national increase in manufacturing jobs, with particular growth in small urban areas like McLean County.
According to a report from the Economic Innovation Group, manufacturing jobs have risen post-pandemic, marking the first full recovery since the 1970s. While a nationwide total of 12.9 million manufacturing jobs were recorded in 2023, areas in the South and West, including Alabama, Nevada, and Florida, have seen the most significant increases.
Despite these gains, challenges persist. Labor experts warn that the labor market relies heavily on immigrant workers for lower-paying roles, an issue that could be exacerbated by potential immigration policy changes under the incoming administration. Moreover, the decline of unions has depressed wages across the sector, leaving many new workers juggling job security with financial instability.
As McLean County pivots away from its legacy industries, experts assert that while this manufacturing boom is promising, it may not single-handedly restore the middle-class lifestyle many Americans aspire to. The state’s economic future, however, looks increasingly vibrant as leaders harness the manufacturing trend to diversify the local economy.
