President-elect Donald Trump has appointed North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum to not only head the Interior Department but also lead a newly created National Energy Council focused on establishing U.S. “energy dominance” globally. Burgum will oversee a panel spanning all branches of the executive government involved in energy permitting, production, and regulation. Trump’s goal is to cut red tape, enhance private sector investments, and prioritize innovation over regulation to achieve energy dominance. Trump accused the “radical left” of hindering American energy advancement in the name of climate change.
Burgum, a former software executive, has a pro-business approach and has implemented policies like income tax cuts and reduced regulations in North Dakota. Industry groups have welcomed Burgum’s appointment, suggesting that Trump’s creation of the energy council signals a focus on boosting domestic energy production and easing regulations. However, environmental groups are concerned about Burgum’s ties to fossil fuel interests and potential unchecked development on public lands.
In addition to Burgum’s appointment, Trump also announced Steven Cheung as White House communications director and Sergio Gor as head of the personnel office. Cheung previously led communications for Trump’s campaign and is known for combative attacks on opponents, while Gor has led a publishing company with Donald Trump Jr. Both appointments suggest a continuation of Trump’s aggressive communication style and close ties to his family.
