Cal Poly Pomona will be hosting its annual GIS Day on November 20, offering participants a chance to explore the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS is a technology used to collect and map data in various fields, from government agencies to research scientists. The event, themed “Connecting Community,” will feature Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval as a keynote speaker, along with industry leaders participating in activities. The event will also include a Careers in GIS panel session aimed at high school students to showcase the importance of GIS in different majors and fields. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bronco Student Center’s Ursa Major and is open to the entire CPP community, as well as high school students from the Pomona Unified School District. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities led by employees from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), founded by CPP alumni Jack and Laura Dangermond. According to Kelly Huh, chair and associate professor of geography and anthropology, GIS technology is essential in providing quick insights for problem-solving and making changes during disasters. The event aims to highlight the real-world applications of GIS and its importance in various fields. Those interested in attending can register for GIS Day and contact Professor Kelly Huh for more information.
