SDSU Volleyball Triumphs Over Oral Roberts, Nears Summit League Title
BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University (SDSU) volleyball secured a crucial 3-1 victory against Oral Roberts on Thursday night at the First Bank & Trust Arena, bringing them one win away from clinching at least a share of the Summit League regular season title. The match also marked Senior Night, where the Jackrabbits honored five seniors: Rachel Wieber, Sophie Johnson, Annalee Ventling-Brown, Alyssa Groves, and Camryn Honn.
Leading the charge for the Jackrabbits, Sylvie Zgonc delivered an impressive performance, recording 20 kills and 10 digs, marking her 15th double-double of the season with an impressive hitting percentage of .302. Groves matched her career high with 13 kills at a .409 hitting percentage, while Madison Burr excelled with a remarkable .714 hitting percentage, amassing 10 kills without an error. Sydni Schetnan contributed nine kills, with all three players boasting four blocks each.
Defensively, Wieber shone with a season-high 14 digs, supported by Rylee Martin’s 12 digs and Joslyn Richardson’s 10. Martin also recorded 19 assists and two aces, bringing her season total to 36, equaling the most aces by a Jackrabbit in the current scoring era. Honn contributed 29 assists, marking a new personal season high. Johnson made an impactful entry in the final set, serving three consecutive aces that sparked a critical 6-0 run for the Jackrabbits.
After leading comfortably in the first two sets and overcoming a setback in the third, SDSU decisively clinched the fourth set. Oral Roberts’ offense was led by Trinity Freeman, who recorded 12 kills. With the loss, ORU falls to 4-23 overall and 2-12 in league play.
The Jackrabbits are poised for a potential title as they head to Grand Forks for a matchup against North Dakota at 11 a.m. Saturday.
