Fargo Police Fatally Shoot Suicidal Man in South Fargo Incident
FARGO — A tragic incident unfolded in south Fargo on Wednesday, November 13, when police officers fatally shot a man outside his home. Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski described the situation as deeply troubling during a press conference later that day.
The man, who had previously expressed suicidal thoughts, called 911 around 7:30 a.m., prompting a police response to his residence in the 6100 block of 61st Avenue South shortly after 10 a.m. During a 30-minute dialogue with the officers, attempts were made to provide him with the necessary assistance, as highlighted by Chief Zibolski. However, at approximately 10:52 a.m., the situation escalated when the man stepped outside armed with a handgun. In response, two Fargo officers discharged their firearms, resulting in the man being pronounced dead at the scene.
The individual had a documented history of similar calls for medical assistance and suicidal ideation, reaching out six times in 2024 alone. The police chief noted that the man had been alone in the home before the incident occurred.
In accordance with protocol, both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NDBCI). One of the officers was identified as an eight-year veteran sergeant, while the other had served for ten months.
Chief Zibolski assured the public of a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident, urging community patience as the NDBCI assesses the situation. The victim’s identity will be released once next of kin are notified, and the names of the involved officers will be disclosed shortly thereafter.
