Law enforcement in Baton Rouge is making efforts to expand crime camera technology to the interstate in order to help solve and deter crimes. With nearly 100 crime cameras already placed around the city, the Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Foundation is now working to cover blind spots along the interstate, where several deadly shootings have occurred this year.
The foundation, along with law enforcement, hopes to have 2-4 cameras up along the interstate before the end of the year. These cameras, costing between $2500 and $7500 each, will be equipped with technology such as license plate readers and weapon detection software. They will be connected to both the Baton Rouge Police Department and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.
According to the foundation’s chairman, Clay Young, the goal is to remove the fear from witnesses who are hesitant to come forward and to help law enforcement protect the community and apprehend criminals. The foundation is in the process of securing the camera locations along the interstate. Young stresses that this technology is crucial for keeping the community safe and hopes to see it implemented in Baton Rouge soon.
This expansion of crime camera technology is seen as a valuable tool to help law enforcement solve crimes and keep the streets safe from potential threats. Residents like Jason Falgoust are hopeful that the presence of these cameras will act as a deterrent to would-be criminals.
