SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In an intense home opener at the Leavey Center, the Santa Clara University men’s basketball team faced a dramatic overtime defeat against North Dakota State, falling 88-80 on Wednesday evening. The game showcased a series of lead changes, with Santa Clara enjoying significant advantages, including a 19-point lead in the first half.

The Broncos (1-2) displayed a strong start, highlighted by an explosive 22-5 run that secured a commanding 26-11 lead before halftime. Led by Adama-Alpha Bal’s 18 points, Santa Clara maintained a 10-point lead in the second half. However, North Dakota State (2-2) showcased resilience, fighting back to tie the game late in regulation.

The Bison’s late surge was led by Jacksen Moni and Jacari White, who each scored 19 points. With the game tied at 70-70 in the closing seconds, North Dakota State capitalized on a foul, allowing Brennan Watkins to hit two clutch free throws that sent the game into overtime.

In the extra period, North Dakota State proved too strong, shooting 66.7% from the field and finishing with a decisive 13-4 run to seal their victory. For Santa Clara, Elijah Mahi contributed with 16 points, while Johnny O’Neil recorded a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Broncos displayed strong performances, with five players scoring in double figures. The team will look to rebound when they face Nevada on November 16 at 7 p.m. in Reno.

This defeat marks Santa Clara’s second consecutive overtime loss and continues their winless history against North Dakota State, falling to 0-2 in their all-time meetings.
