A police officer and suspected shooter were injured in a shooting incident that took place at a high-rise building in Midtown Atlanta. The officer and suspect were both hospitalized with unspecified injuries, but they are believed to be non-life-threatening. The suspect, identified as 70-year-old Jay Stevens Berger, will be investigated for aggravated assault and other violations.
The shooting occurred after a dispute between a building worker and the suspect on the 33rd floor of the building, which is occupied by residences. The suspect fired multiple shots from a balcony using multiple guns, including handguns and long guns. Police responded to the incident and attempted to negotiate with the suspect before ultimately breaching the door of the unit and taking him into custody.
The building, which is also home to a Four Seasons hotel and residences, was sealed off during the incident, and a shelter-in-place order was issued for those in and near the high-rise. The area has since been reopened, and the suspect is in custody.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation due to the police use of force. The safety and security of guests and employees in the building are top priorities for the management of the Four Seasons hotel, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the company.
