Larry Hogan criticizes Angela Alsobrooks for tax breaks controversy

Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, Angela Alsobrooks, is facing backlash after a CNN report revealed that she took advantage of tax breaks she did not qualify for on two properties in Washington, D.C., and Maryland. This led her Republican opponent, former Governor Larry Hogan, to voice concerns over the allegations. Alsobrooks allegedly saved thousands of dollars by claiming a homestead tax exemption on both properties, which CNN reported as a violation of state and local tax relief requirements.

In an exclusive interview with WMDT News, Hogan expressed his worries about the allegations, stating that Alsobrooks will have to answer for not paying her own taxes while advocating for raising taxes on others. He also criticized her for what he perceived as a double-standard in her policies.

Alsobrooks’ campaign issued statements regarding the allegations in both D.C. and Maryland, explaining that she was unaware of the tax credits attached to one property and failed to transfer the homestead tax credit on the other. Despite no financial gain, she is working to repay any credits received on the old property.

The General Election for the U.S. Senate seat soon to be vacated by retiring Senator Ben Cardin is set for November 5, with Hogan and Alsobrooks going head-to-head in the race. While the campaign requested an interview with Alsobrooks, it was denied, and the statements were issued in response to the controversy. Governor Hogan also highlighted his own record of cutting taxes in Maryland during his tenure.
