Sources say China allegedly hacked phones of Trump, Vance, and Harris campaign affiliates.

A recent Chinese hacking campaign targeted the phones of U.S. political figures, including Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, his running mate Sen. JD Vance, Vice President Kamala Harris, and the staff of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are investigating the unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure by actors affiliated with China. The U.S. government concluded that three American telecommunications companies, AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies, were hacked. Verizon confirmed that a highly sophisticated nation-state actor targeted several U.S. telecommunications providers. However, it is unclear if the hack was an attempt to influence the 2024 presidential election. China has a history of cyber espionage and bold operations to spy on U.S. businesses and government figures. While Iran and Russia have been accused of attempts to sway voters in the past, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence has stated that China does not seek to influence the presidential race. Kevin Collier, Ken Dilanian, Tom Winter, and Brian Cheung of NBC News have reported on the hacking campaign, with the Chinese embassy denying knowledge of the situation and claiming no intention to interfere in the U.S. election.
