2 Homes Damaged and Evacuations Ordered in California’s Oakland Hills Fire

A five-alarm brush fire in Oakland, California, known as the Keller Fire, began on Friday afternoon and has burned two homes. The fire started in a home on Mountain Avenue and spread to a grove of Eucalyptus trees, reaching 15 acres in size. The blaze was 50% contained as of Saturday morning. Evacuation orders were issued for Campus Drive and Crystal Ridge Court, with surrounding areas also being evacuated. Fire Chief Damon Covington stated that while crews were able to stop the fire’s forward progress, there was still much work to be done. Two homes were impacted by the flames, with dozens of others being threatened but not damaged. One resident, Delane Sims, described her husband’s experience of escaping their burning home after a front window exploded due to the fire. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao urged residents to evacuate immediately for their health and safety. The Oakland Fire Department stated that crews were working aggressively to fully extinguish the blaze. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) provided updates on containment efforts. Mayor Thao emphasized the importance of protecting citizens’ health as the primary reason for the evacuations.
