Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a series of strikes on Beirut. Nasrallah, who had been the leader of the Iran-backed militant group for over three decades, was targeted in the recent attacks. Nasrallah’s death is seen as a significant escalation on the Israeli side, as he had previously been considered off-limits for assassination. Under Nasrallah’s leadership, Hezbollah had been involved in training fighters from Hamas and militias in Iraq and Yemen, as well as obtaining missiles and rockets from Iran for use against Israel.
Following the announcement of Nasrallah’s death, Hezbollah launched a wide-ranging attack on northern Israel, shelling cities and targeting Israeli soldiers. Israel is now on high alert for potential retaliation and broader conflict. The UK has urged its nationals in Lebanon to leave immediately as tensions escalate.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been moved to a secure location with heightened security measures following Nasrallah’s killing. Protests have erupted in Tehran in support of Hezbollah, with demonstrators condemning Israel’s attacks.
Israel has also conducted airstrikes in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah weapons storage facilities and rocket launch sites. Thousands of Beirut residents have been forced to flee their homes to escape the Israeli strikes. The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for potential further escalations.
