Ukrainian officials have reported at least eight deaths in two consecutive Russian drone attacks on a medical center in the northeast Ukrainian city of Sumy. The first attack killed one person, with the second attack occurring while patients and staff were evacuating. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Russia used Shahed drones in the attacks, resulting in eleven injuries.
The attacks in Sumy occurred within the context of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with Sumy located near the border with Russia’s Kursk region. Ukrainian forces have launched an offensive near this border, aiming to create a buffer zone inside Russia.
Following the attacks, Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down a significant number of Russian drones, while Russia’s Defense Ministry reported downing Ukrainian drones over bordering regions. Zelenskyy has been advocating for support for Ukraine, meeting with US President Joe Biden and detailing his “victory plan” aimed at ending the war on Ukraine’s terms.
In response to the escalating conflict, Biden announced an additional $8 billion in military aid for Ukraine, including the provision of Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) munitions to enhance Ukraine’s capabilities. The attacks on the medical center in Sumy highlight the ongoing violence in Ukraine and the international community’s efforts to support the country in its conflict with Russia.
