Taylor County in Florida is expecting a direct hit from Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm. Despite mandatory evacuation orders, up to half of the county’s 20,000 residents have chosen to stay put. Sheriff Wayne Padgett warned those residents to mark themselves with their information so officials can identify them later. The storm is predicted to bring an 18- to 20-foot storm surge, which poses a significant risk to those in low-lying areas. Padgett expressed deep concern about the storm, stating that it is safer for residents to get to a shelter in another county. Uber has offered to transport Taylor County residents to shelters outside the county. The sheriff noted that power crews are on standby and food trucks are available for those in need. Despite the imminent threat from Helene, Padgett reassured residents that they will endure and get through the storm together. This will be the third major storm within a year for Taylor County, but officials are prepared and ready to assist residents in any way possible. It is a waiting game for now as residents brace for the impact of Hurricane Helene.
