Vice President Kamala Harris is set to visit the southern border in Arizona for the first time since jumping into the 2024 race, aiming to highlight former President Donald Trump’s role in blocking a bipartisan border deal this year. Harris’s campaign sees immigration and border security as a weak spot and is looking to emphasize her previous work on the issue while painting Trump as “dangerous.” She plans to discuss pushing a bipartisan border security plan and reviving a bill Trump killed, if elected.
Trump, who has made the border and immigration a focal point of his campaign, has criticized Harris’s border record, calling her weak on the issue and accusing her of going to the border for political reasons. A recent NBC News poll found that more registered voters believe Trump would better handle securing the border and controlling immigration, while more believe Harris would be better at treating immigrants humanely and protecting their rights.
Harris’s visit to the border town of Douglas, Arizona will be her second during her term as vice president, following a trip to El Paso, Texas in 2021. Despite the decline in migrants seeking shelter, border patrol agents apprehended the lowest monthly number of migrants crossing the border since President Biden took office. The visit is part of a larger strategy by Harris to address a critical issue and position herself against Trump in the lead up to the 2024 election.
