Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing that negotiations alone will not end the war in Ukraine and that Russia must be forced into peace. He asserted that Russia, as the sole aggressor and violator of the UN Charter, must be compelled to end the conflict that began with its invasion in February 2022.
Zelenskyy’s “victory plan” seeks support from Ukraine’s allies and rejects proposals for territorial concessions to Putin. Russia currently occupies less than 20% of Ukraine and continues to advance on the eastern front. The meeting was attended by representatives from 14 member nations, excluding Russia, whose absence was criticized by their Permanent Representative to the UN.
Zelenskyy also accused North Korea and Iran of providing arms to Russia, labeling them as “de facto accomplices.” The supply of weapons has caused tensions between China and the US, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accusing China of supporting Russia’s aggression. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi denied the accusations, emphasizing China’s commitment to peace in Ukraine.
As the US presidential election approaches, Zelenskyy’s visit to the US coincides with campaigning by Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. The issue of Ukraine is a key factor in shaping US relations with Kyiv. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, condemning Russia’s invasion as a violation of international principles. The meeting underscored the continued challenges in resolving the conflict in Ukraine and the need for international cooperation to achieve peace.
