Stewart Rosenwasser, a former Orange County prosecutor, died by suicide at his home while FBI agents were arriving to arrest him on bribery charges. The indictment alleges that Rosenwasser accepted at least $63,000 in bribes while serving in the District Attorney’s Office. When FBI agents arrived at his home, Rosenwasser allegedly pointed a gun at them, and one shot was fired before he barricaded himself and took his own life. The indictment claims that Rosenwasser abused his authority to investigate and prosecute individuals at the request of his co-defendant, a self-proclaimed millionaire. The co-defendant allegedly paid Rosenwasser $15,000 initially and continued making bribery payments until May 2024, totaling at least $63,000. Rosenwasser was accused of lying to senior leadership in an attempt to conceal his criminal conduct. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on the case. Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler expressed condolences to Rosenwasser’s family, calling his death truly heartbreaking. Rosenwasser received several awards during his time in the district attorney’s office, including the Arson Prosecutor of the Year Award. He resigned from his position in June.
