China has publicly announced the successful launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean, marking the first time they have acknowledged such an event. The missile, carrying a dummy warhead, was launched as part of their annual training plan and was not directed at any specific country or target. China informed the countries concerned in advance, but the exact path and impact zone of the missile were not disclosed.
Experts noted that this type of test is unusual for China and may signify new requirements for testing due to ongoing nuclear modernization efforts. The People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force, responsible for China’s conventional and nuclear missiles, is working to modernize the country’s nuclear forces to deter potential threats from other countries, such as the US.
However, some analysts argue that China’s nuclear buildup is progressing beyond the necessary minimum deterrence level. China claims to adhere to a “no first use” policy and states that the central military commission, led by President Xi Jinping, is the only authority for nuclear command.
The launch of the ICBM comes amid increased Chinese military activities near Taiwan, with reports of Chinese military aircraft and missile drills in the region. Taiwan has responded by deploying its own air and naval forces to monitor the situation. The escalating tensions between China and Taiwan have raised concerns internationally, especially with the US arms sales to Taiwan and China’s ongoing nuclear buildup.
