China successfully launches Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) into the Pacific Ocean after decades

China conducted a successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, raising international concerns as tensions between China and the United States continue to escalate. The missile was launched by the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force and carried a simulated warhead that landed in a predetermined area of the high seas. This test, the first of its kind since 1980, was described by China as routine and part of annual military training. However, analysts find this explanation questionable as such tests are not conducted regularly.

China’s nuclear arsenal is rapidly expanding, with the country’s military undergoing modernization efforts to become a “world class” military by 2049. The country has been increasing its nuclear warheads, with estimates suggesting it could quadruple its arsenal to 1,500 warheads by 2035. This growth in China’s nuclear capabilities has raised concerns internationally, especially given the country’s no first use policy on nuclear weapons.

The test comes at a time of increased military activity in the Asia-Pacific region, with North Korea also conducting missile tests. The U.S. has deployed an advanced missile system in the Philippines, which China sees as a threat. With ongoing tensions and military buildups in the region, China’s test-firing of an ICBM into the Pacific Ocean adds to the growing concerns surrounding nuclear proliferation and security in the area.
