Criminal proceedings have been launched in Switzerland following the death of an American woman in an assisted suicide capsule. The 64-year-old woman died in the “Sarco” device, developed by The Last Resort, in a forest retreat in the Canton of Schaffhausen. She had been suffering from serious health problems for many years. Schaffhausen Police have opened criminal proceedings against several people for incitement and aiding and abetting suicide. The woman’s identity has not been disclosed, and no further details have been provided by the authorities. The U.S. Embassy in Bern has stated that they are aware of the situation but have no further comment at this time. The Sarco device, invented by Australian physician Philip Nitschke, allows the person inside to activate it with a button press, leading to peaceful death a few minutes later. Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland as long as it is done without a selfish motive, leading to the existence of several assisted suicide clinics in the country. The Last Resort, which operates the Sarco device, describes itself as altruistic and offers its services free of charge, with some costs associated with using the machine and body removal afterwards. In the event of a crisis, individuals can contact the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255 for support.
