Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, demanding that Israel be held accountable for its actions in Gaza, which he described as “genocide”. He criticized Israel for its killing of civilians, destruction of homes, hospitals, and schools, and attacks on journalists in Gaza and Lebanon.
Muizzu also called for the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He urged world leaders to support Palestine’s bid to become a full UN member. In addition to his political concerns, Muizzu also highlighted the urgent threat of climate change to the Maldives, the world’s lowest-lying country. He emphasized the need for rich countries and major carbon emitters to fulfill their financial pledges to help developing nations adapt to climate change.
In June, Muizzu had announced a ban on Israelis entering the Maldives in response to Israel’s war in Gaza, which has caused immense devastation and loss of life. He stressed the importance of international cooperation in addressing both the political turmoil in the Middle East and the environmental challenges facing the Maldives.
Muizzu’s speech at the UN General Assembly underscored the interconnected nature of global issues, from human rights violations to climate change. He called for solidarity and action from the international community to ensure a sustainable future for all nations.
