Prosecutors say suspect in second Trump assassination attempt left note expressing intent to kill ex-president – live updates | US elections 2024

Ryan Wesley Routh, the man suspected of a second assassination attempt on Donald Trump, acknowledged his plot in a note found by police. Routh’s note, included in a package given to a witness before his arrest, stated, “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you.” Routh’s intentions were further revealed through geolocation data from his cellphones near Trump’s properties, a handwritten list of dates and venues where Trump would be, and a notebook with information on Ukraine, combat, and criticisms of governments.

The House of Representatives narrowly avoided a government shutdown after passing a short-term funding deal decoupled from legislation on non-citizen voting demanded by Trump. Republican House speaker Mike Johnson compromised with funding for three months and additional protection for Trump and Democratic opponent Kamala Harris ahead of the presidential election. Harris has seen a surge in favorability and is viewed as a candidate for change by voters.

In response to Routh’s actions, FBI agents found a book he authored in February 2023 expressing regret for Trump’s presidency and suggesting natural selection for political leaders. Prosecutors revealed that Routh’s phones were near Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s golf course before the incident. Routh left a box of incriminating evidence at a witness’s house months prior, including ammunition, tools, and a note offering $150,000 for someone to finish the job. Trump will hold a rally in Mint Hill, North Carolina, as Routh faces charges related to his alleged plot.
