Italy is preparing for extreme weather as Storm Boris, which has already caused heavy flooding and fatalities in Central Europe, heads south. At least 21 people have died in Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Romania as a result of the storm, with Slovakia, Hungary, and Croatia also on high alert for flooding. The regions of Emilia-Romagna, Marche, and Lazio in Italy are now also on high alert.
The Czech-Polish border was heavily impacted by the storm, with thousands of people evacuated and hundreds rescued. While the threat of flooding in the Czech Republic has decreased, South Bohemia remains at risk. Villages along the Danube River are also at risk, with water levels continuing to rise.
In Austria, entire villages in the Pielach Valley and the Kamp Valley are under water, with many forced to evacuate. Hungary fears the Danube River will overflow in Budapest, with the mayor warning of potentially the worst floods in a decade. Efforts in Poland to combat the floods continue, with residents and emergency response teams working together to secure rivers and provide aid to evacuated individuals.
As Italy braces for the impact of Storm Boris, residents and authorities are urged to take precautions and stay informed about the changing weather conditions. The devastation caused by the storm in Central Europe serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness and response in the face of extreme weather events.
