Former Memphis police officer Emmitt Martin III testified in federal court that police officers violated protocol when they used excessive force against Tyre Nichols, who later died due to injuries sustained during a traffic stop in January 2023. Martin admitted to exaggerating Nichols’ actions and requesting a felony stop despite there being no warrants for his arrest or any indication that he was a violent offender.
Martin, along with another former officer, have pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the incident, while three other officers have pleaded not guilty. The officers were part of a crime suppression unit called Scorpion, which was disbanded after Nichols’ death. Nichols, who was Black, died in the hospital three days after the brutal beating, sparking renewed calls for police reform and charges against the officers involved.
Video footage of the incident showed Nichols being beaten with batons, pepper sprayed, and kicked in the face while calling for his mother. An autopsy report confirmed that Nichols’ death was a homicide caused by head injuries sustained during the encounter.
The testimony from Martin sheds light on the aggressive actions taken by the officers during the traffic stop and the subsequent cover-up attempts. The officers involved in the incident have been fired for violating police department policies, and the case has raised concerns about police accountability and the need for reform within law enforcement agencies.
