The House unanimously approved a resolution to establish a bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The task force will examine federal, state, and local law enforcement and agency actions leading up to the attack on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13. The resolution garnered 416 votes in favor with 16 members abstaining. The task force will consist of seven Republicans and six Democrats, and is expected to issue a final report to the House by Dec. 13 with recommendations for legislative reforms aimed at preventing future security breaches. House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the importance of bipartisan efforts to safeguard the nation’s leaders. The task force, supported by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, will investigate the security lapses that allowed the assassination attempt and work towards ensuring accountability and preventing similar failures in the future. The Department of Homeland Security has launched reviews into Secret Service planning and preparedness related to the shooting, and Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following criticism of her preparedness during testimony before the House Oversight Committee. The shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by the Secret Service during the attack. NBC News reported that Crooks was identified as a suspicious person prior to the shooting and had flown a drone over the venue in the hours leading up to the attack.
