Eight Palestinian prisoners released from Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank have reported being tortured and threatened while in custody. The prisoners, including two women and six men, showed signs of physical abuse upon their release. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society provided first aid to the prisoners at the Kissufim military checkpoint before transferring them to Al-Aqsa Hospital in Gaza.
According to Al Jazeera’s reporter Hind Khoudary, the freed prisoners recounted being deprived of medicine and clothing while in detention. They were also questioned about Hamas members and Israeli captives in Gaza. Muhammad Abu Salmiya, the director of al-Shifa Hospital, who was among the released prisoners, stated that inmates faced daily abuse in prison and some had died due to lack of food and medical care.
The prisoners’ release comes amid a surge in arrests of Palestinians following an attack in southern Israel attributed to Hamas. The Palestine Prisoners Society and the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Commission reported that 9,800 Palestinians have been detained in the West Bank since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza. The Israeli military had accused Hamas of using al-Shifa Hospital as a base, leading to Abu Salmiya’s arrest and subsequent release after over seven months in custody.
