Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party’s standard bearer, has been described as a tough prosecutor who has taken on perpetrators of various crimes throughout her career. Critics, however, argue that she has been a political chameleon rather than a tough-on-crime prosecutor, highlighting her tenure in San Francisco and as California’s attorney general. Despite the criticism, the White House defends Harris’ work in making the criminal justice system more just and equitable.
Harris has described herself as a “progressive prosecutor” in her memoirs, emphasizing the importance of balancing accountability for serious crimes with opportunities for rehabilitation for nonviolent offenders. Throughout her career, Harris has focused on securing convictions and increasing felony conviction rates, while also implementing programs like Back on Track to help nonviolent offenders turn their lives around.
Harris’ relationship with progressives has been strained at times, particularly over policies such as prosecuting truancy cases and collaboration with federal immigration agencies regarding undocumented immigrants. Despite disagreements, some progressives support Harris’s presidential bid, citing her ability to balance being tough on crime with reform-minded criminal justice approaches.
As California’s attorney general, Harris was involved in implementing prison reforms, including classifying certain felonies as misdemeanors to alleviate prison overcrowding. While these reforms have led to a decrease in the state’s prison population, there have been challenges, including an increase in violent crime and a prison-to-homelessness pipeline. Harris has been praised for her efforts to reform the criminal justice system, but also faces criticism for the unintended consequences of some of her policies.
