Renowned mural artist Nancy Balyeat is currently painting a custom mural on the Roughrider Arena building at the North Dakota State Fair. Despite the challenges of working on a large-scale mural up close, Balyeat takes breaks to step back and view the entire image in order to make necessary adjustments. The mural, which showcases farm animals and reflects the arena’s new purpose of animal showcasing, is being painted with oil paints on corrugated steel siding. Balyeat, who has been a professional artist since the age of 16, has an extensive art career that includes watercolors, illustrations, children’s books, and murals. She plans to work on the mural throughout the entire week of the State Fair, aiming to have it completed by the last day with approximately 88 hours of work put into it. The State Fair has installed benches for visitors to observe Balyeat’s mural-making process, providing a unique opportunity for the public to witness large-scale mural art being created in real-time. Balyeat’s dedication to her craft and her attention to detail in creating beautiful and impactful murals continue to inspire and captivate audiences at the fairgrounds.
