Widespread Power Outages in Jamaica following Hurricane Beryl’s Impact

Hurricane Beryl has wreaked havoc in the Caribbean, leaving thousands of homes in Jamaica without power and causing devastation in other countries as well. The storm, which was initially a category four hurricane, hit Jamaica’s southern coast, bringing heavy rain and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Beryl has also made landfall in Mexico, causing strong winds and dangerous storm surges in the Yucatan Peninsula. The storm is forecasted to bring heavy rain to Mexico’s coast and has prompted a hurricane watch for southern Texas.

The impact of Hurricane Beryl has been severe, with at least 10 reported deaths and numerous homes destroyed in countries like St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Venezuela. In Jamaica alone, 65% of customers were left without power, and widespread damage to infrastructure and property has been reported.

International aid has been mobilized to assist with the recovery efforts in the affected areas, with the UN unlocking $4 million from its emergency response fund. Prime Minister Andrew Holness has expressed gratitude to first responders and essential services for their efforts during this crisis.

Meteorologists were taken aback by how quickly Hurricane Beryl intensified, going from a tropical depression to a major hurricane in just 42 hours. The storm serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of nature and the importance of preparedness in the face of such disasters.
