Russia University Professor Convicted of Spying for Moscow by Estonia

Estonian University Professor Jailed for Spying for Russia

Viacheslav Morozov, a Russian university professor teaching in Estonia, was sentenced to six years and three months in prison for spying for Russian military intelligence. Estonian officials accused him of undermining the country’s security by collecting information on defense and security policies, as well as social integration and political issues. The court found that Morozov provided Moscow with sensitive information about Estonia during his 14-year operation in the country.

This incident reflects the ongoing tensions between Russia and Estonia, with the Baltic state being a vocal supporter of Ukraine. Estonian officials highlighted the aggressive attempts by Russian spy services to recruit Estonians, including through manipulation and pressure. The spy chief warned against travel to Russia and revealed that Morozov cooperated with the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence arm, to access information on Estonia’s internal and foreign affairs.

Estonia has stepped up its counterintelligence efforts in recent years, arresting several individuals for spying for Russia. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas described Russia’s actions as a “shadow war” against the West. This case is part of a broader campaign by Russia, which has included sabotage and attacks across Europe. The Estonian authorities are vigilant in protecting their country from foreign interference and espionage activities.
