Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. expressed frustration after the Utica-Rome region was excluded from federal funding for technology jobs. Despite having over 2,000 semiconductor jobs and a thriving technology sector, the area did not receive any funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Tech Hub grant awards. The Biden-Harris Administration announced approximately $504 million in grants to 12 Tech Hubs across the country to promote critical technologies and create jobs in innovative industries.
New York’s NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub was one of the 12 recipients, receiving an estimated $40 million to support semiconductor manufacturing. Picente expressed disappointment at the exclusion of his region but vowed to continue investing in the tech corridor with the help of New York State and other partners.
The Tech Hubs Program is a flagship initiative of President Biden’s administration to boost economic growth, enhance national security, and advance America’s leadership in critical technologies. Picente highlighted the importance of investing in the tech sector and creating job opportunities in the region.
Despite the setback, Oneida County remains committed to supporting the growth of its technology industry and will seek alternative funding sources to drive innovation and economic development in the area. Picente’s dedication to promoting technology jobs and economic competitiveness in the region remains unwavering.
