A driver suspected of being under the influence crashed into a crowd celebrating the holiday at a New York City park, killing three people and injuring seven others. The incident occurred at Corlears Hook Park in Manhattan, with the pickup truck driving at a high rate of speed that went up on the sidewalk and struck the crowd. Two victims were in critical condition, three were seriously injured, and three others were not seriously hurt. Responding officers smelled alcohol on the driver, but testing is still ongoing. Mayor Eric Adams described the event as a tragedy that occurred as families were enjoying a Fourth of July evening. The driver was speeding east on Water Street in a Ford F-150, went through an intersection, and onto the sidewalk where the people were hit. First responders found the pickup truck on top of four victims, and bystanders at the park prevented the driver from leaving until authorities arrived. The driver’s identity was not revealed at the news conference, and further investigations will be conducted into the incident.
